In Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment, one theme in this novel is motherhood. This is seen in different places in the book, such as, when in the beginning Max has to wake up the flock, prepare breakfast, teach everyone different lessons, like, what to do and what not to do, etc. Although Max is not the "real" mother of anyone in the flock, she watches over them and cares for them like she is their mother. Also, when Max's motherly instincts come in when she sees the boys cornering Ella on the ground and she has no choice but to swoop down and try to protect her. Another example of the theme of Motherhood in the book is when Max finally experiences a real-life mother in action when she stays with the Martinez family. Max saw how Dr. Martinez took care of Max because she was hurt even though she did not know her. Being with the family made Max realize how a real mother and family is supposed to function.
